2019 Unit Reports in the Contract Bridge Forum

Each month the La Jolla unit contributes to the What’s New in District 22 section of the D22 edition of The Contract Bridge Forum, the newspaper members receive. Gathered below are the reports for 2018. The month refers to the publication month but the newspaper is delivered slightly before the publication month, reports are submitted a couple of weeks in advance, and the reports cover the preceding weeks.


January 2019

Lynne Feldman and Steven Cooper were first overall in our November 11th unit game, with Avram and Susan Ninyo capturing both flights B and C.

In our November 25th game, Marjorie and Charles O’Malley won both flights A and B, and Flight C went to Ben Domurat and Mike France.

The unit wishes to welcome new members Victor Elkind, Paddy Rainwater, Gerald Kibbey, and Saul Mirsky, and we extend hearty congratulations to the following members for their advancement in ACBL rank: new Club Masters—Barbara Elliot, Bonnie Rose, and Mona Sonnenshein; new Sectional Master—Selby Winkler; and new Regional Master—James Smith. On December 9th our Holiday Party and Unit Game were held again at the lovely La Jolla Country Club, with overall winners Maritha Pottenger and Kent Hartman. Elaine Chan and Pamela Lawrence won Flight B, and Flight C went to Bob Mann and Su Datta.

Maritha and Kent repeated their overall win at our December 23rd game, with Cedric Pang and Ken Horwedel (both former directors of our game!!) taking Flight B and Jacob and Tony Tan winning Flight C.

The unit wishes to congratulate the following members for their advancement in ACBL rank: new Junior Masters—Lawrence Gratt and Richard Winkler; new Sectional Master: Michael Sloane; new Regional Master—Anne Graves; and new Gold (2500 points) Life Master—Manoochehr Bahmanian. Marc Matz's Soledad Club report

Our November games at the Soledad Club were run and directed by Kathy Moyer.

Starting with the November 5th game, Elaine Chan and Bob Moore were first overall, with Larry Sherman and John Boackle coming in second. Gary Horton and Sally Ishihara won flight B, and Julie Greenberg with Charles Stoopak taking flight C.

The November 12th game was a Grass Roots game, which helps our District 22 raise funds for the Grand National Teams and the North American Pairs that we send to the Nationals. Bette Cornelius and Dan Dayani won first overall, Kit Humphry and Henri Farhi coming in second, and Linda Gu with Tom Herzog claiming third. First overall B and C were Susan Koshkarian and Bert Cornelison.

On November 19th there was a trifecta winning pair! Lynn Anderson and Jules Borack came in first overall in flights A and B, and C. Second overall was David Oakley and Larry Sherman, with a third/fourth tie between Linda Gu with Tom Herzog and Maxine Weseley playing with Wally Augustin.

Tom Herzog, having a very good month at Soledad, won on November 26th with Murray Warmath. Larry Sherman also had a strong November, coming in second overall again with David Oakley. Carol Abramowitz and Chris Hastie took flight B, and Steve Provol with Charles Stoopak claimed flight C.

The December games were handled by Marc Matz.

Our December 3rd game was a Club ACBL Membership event, a point bonus game that the League offers as a thank you to all the active membership. Chris Hastie and Carol Abramowitz with a blisteringly strong game won first overall, with Evie and John Coufal close behind them. Karen Perling and Merrel Olesen topped in flight B; Marila Lombrozo and her partner Alice Drewelow were first in flight C.

On December 10 Elaine Chan and Bob Moore won with a massive 73.96% game! Second overall and first in flight B, were Susan Monken and Jill Seagren. Shelly Basson and Andrew Ries took the honors in flight C.

Linda Gu and Tom Herzog were clear winners in the December 17th game. Second overall went to Maritha Pottenger and Kathy Moyer. First in flight B were Murray Warmath and Nagy Nosseir. John Brand and Steve Provol won flight C.

The last game of the year at Soledad, on December 31, was a Charity Club championship. It was won by Freda Anderson with Ray Sachs. Second, yet again was the estimable pair of David Oakley and Larry Sherman. Third, and first in both flights B and C were, visiting from Pennsylvania, Susie O’Neil and Nancy Tyson.

Our January 13th unit game was won first overall by Lamya Agelidis and Larry Sherman, with Marianne Klayman and Stephen Seagren winning Flight B and Flight C going to Helene Miller and Nira Levy.

On January 27th, Judy and Norton Rimer were the big winners, and Flight B was taken by Linda Gu and Jeremy Fields, Flight C by Robert and Marie Garin.

The unit welcomes new members Alicia Amberg and Raymond Eller, and we wish to congratulate the following members on their advancement in ACBL rank: new Junior Masters—Victor Elkind and Karen Novak; and new Silver Life Master—Marie Garin. At our February 24th unit game the first-overall winners were Bette Cornelius and Dan Dayani. Carol Murphy and Susan Wightman won both flights B and C.

The February 10th winners were Kent Hartman and Maritha Pottenger, with Robert Dunham and Virginia Herrick taking Flight B, and Flight C going to Ed Brilmyer and Bill Black.

The unit wishes to welcome new members Penny Herzog, Steven Oster, and Sue Wightman, and we wish to congratulate the following members on their advancement in ACBL rank: new Junior Master—Nancy Linen; new Club Master—Sherron Schuster; new Advanced NABC Master—Bob Brobst; and new Bronze Life Master (750 points)—Batia Kvashny. Marc Matz’s Soledad Club report

With 19 tables our February 4th club championship game gave a strong start to the month with David Oakley and Larry Sherman winning first place. Barbara Blake and Sharon Gabriel took Flight B, with Patrick Staley and Gerald Kibbey 1st in C.

Blake and Gabriel followed up the following week with a first place win on February 11th. Merel Olesen and Maritha Pottenger came in second, while Gerald Kibbey and Patrick Staley captured 1st C again.

February 18th saw Carol and Scott Nelson at the top, with Ann Manaster and Judy Elsberry in second overall (and 1st in C).

On the last Monday of the month, February 25th, Mary Diller and Sandy Dinnsen swept the field, 1st A, and B, and C! Second was David Oakley and Larry Sherman, with Susan Koshkarian and Bert Cornelison a close 3rd.

In our March 10 unit game, Mac Busby and Mark Perlmutter took first place, with Scott and Carol Nelson capturing flight B, and flight C going to Marilyn Peters-Dunn and Carolyn Casey.

Kitty and Steven Cooper were first overall in our March 24 game, with Jacob and Tony Tan taking both flights B and C.

And in our March 31 game all three flights A, B, and C went to Don Davison and John Howard!

The unit wishes to welcome new member Anne Burdick, and we also wish to congratulate the following unit members on their advancement in ACBL rank: new Club Masters—Laury Baldwin, Dr. A. Marcus Gerber, and Mary Lisiecki; new NABC Master—Dr. Robert Dunham; new Bronze Life Master (500 points)—Susan Wightman; and new Emerald Life Master (7500 points!)—David Oakley. Great job, all! Hot off the press: the Soledad Club has now added a sanctioned open ACBL game on Wednesdays at 11:30, directed by Kathy Moyer.

Judy and Norton Rimer were the first overall winners in our April 14th unit game, with Charles and Marjorie O’Malley taking both flights B and C.

Our April 28th game went to Lynne Feldman and Steve Cooper, Flight B going to Avram and Susan Ninyo, and Flight C conquered by Bridget Poizner and Ray Hilbert.

The unit wishes to welcome new member Barbara Sherman, and we also wish to congratulate new Junior Master Nancy Duxbury. (Barbara and Nancy receive a free play in June or July.)

And finally, just around the very, very corner: our La Jolla Unit sectional is being held the weekend of June 7-9 at the Soledad Club. Friday and Saturday starting times are 12 noon, and Sunday starting time is 10 a.m. (Complete schedule and more details at lajollabridge.com.)

Our May 12 unit game was won by Jim Johnsen and Patrick Chen, with flights B and C going to Stephen and Jill Seagren.

On May 26th Jeremy Fields and Linda Gu took first overall in flights A and B, with Ben Domurat and Mike France taking flight C.

The unit wishes to welcome new member George Damoose, and we wish to congratulate the following members on their advancement in ACBL rank: new Sectional Masters—Kathleen and Larrie Brainard; new Regional Masters—John Fabian and Glenda Ginsburg; new NABC Masters—Roy Jordan and Mina Taylor; and new Gold Life Master (2500 points)—Gail Dunham. Kathy Moyer’s Soledad Club report

The Soledad Club has experienced a significant increase in the attendance at its Monday, 12:30 PM open games since the temporary suspension of most games at Adventures in Bridge (AIB). Soledad’s Monday game hit an all-time high of 26½ tables on Memorial Day at its club championship with Suzanne Lebendig and Roger Doughman coming in first overall, Tom Herzog and Linda Gu, first in flight B and Michael Kole and Barry Anderson first in flight C.

The Soledad Club has also added a Wednesday game at 11:30 AM with top table count of 15 tables on May 22nd with Phyllis Yates and Linda Gu taking first N/S and Paul Darin and Ray Sachs taking first E/W. And by the way, AIB has been able to add a Friday night game and two games on Saturday at its new location, 9025 Balboa Ave. Wirt’s Saturday 9:30 AM game is a 1999 game and the 1 PM game is the much enjoyed barometer game. Space is limited so reservations recommended.

Our June 7—9 sectional had a total attendance of 140 tables, producing 657.60 masterpoints for 183 players. Top winner was Henri Fahri from Chula Vista, taking home 20.90 points.

Tim Flaherty and Bill Grant were the overall winners in our June 23rd unit game, with flight B going to Janice Joerger and Abe Gleiberman , and Vilson Ellaiold and Tom Sauer taking flight C.

The unit wishes to welcome new members Katie Jacobson and Betty Vorhies, and we wish to congratulate Marila Lombrozo on her advancement in ACBL rank to Club Master. (And everyone in this paragraph gets a free play in July or August!)

August was double-trophy month! On August 11th Kent Hartman and Maritha Pottenger won our Weiss trophy, the oldest trophy in San Diego! In the same game Elazar Harel and Chebli Jada won both Flights B and C.

Then on August 25th the Bill Logan Trophy was won by Linda Gu and Martha Woodworth, who also won Flight B. Flight C went to Bob Brobst and Matthew Kidd.

The unit wishes to welcome new member Wissam Jada, and we wish to congratulate the following members for their advancements in ACBL rank: new Junior Masters—Frances Doyle and Christa Kelly; new Sectional Master—Willie Kiang; new Regional Masters—Sandy Sherman and Selby Winkler; new Ruby Life Masters (1500 points)—Carol Abramowitz and Jill Seagren; and new Sapphire Life Master (3500 points)—Elaine Chan. And now, mark your calendar: our joint NLM Sectional with the San Diego Unit will be held Friday and Saturday, October 25-26. We’ll have lots of silver points to give out to those trying to reach their next ACBL milestone.

This year’s tournament will again be at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center (JCC) at 4126 Executive Drive in La Jolla. The JCC is between I-5 and I-805 near University Town Centre, so it’s easy to get to. Lots of parking in the rear of the center, which you can access from Eastgate Mall (the first street north of Executive Drive). Just look for our “Bridge Tournament” signs and greeter by the entrance.

The game is open to all Non-Life Masters with fewer than 750 points. Games are at 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If you are playing in the morning, be sure to take advantage of our excellent, $5 box lunch (yes there is a vegetarian option) by ordering before your morning game.

Soledad Club report by Kathy Moyer

MONDAY GAME: The average number of tables at the Soledad Club Monday game grew from 22 tables in July to 24 tables in August. The annual ACBL Membership game was held on August 19th. The winners in flight A were Murray Warmath and Sandra Gagnon, flight B leaders were Larry Sherman and Stephen Seagren, and flight C was won by Patrick Staley and Brian Castle. The National American Pairs game held on August 5th ended with Andy Loh and Alan Rowen winners in flight A; Carolyn Crabtree and Lori Morrow top in flight B; with Jim Smith and Bill Gore taking top in flight C. The August 26th game hit an all-time high of 27 tables. The top scorer in the Monday games in August was Murray Warmath winning 12.04 MPs with three different partners. Congratulations to all winners.

WEDNESDAY GAME: The Wednesday August games averaged 15 tables per game, up 3 tables from July. The club champion held August 21st was won by John and Bette Strauch in flight A, Ken Batko and George Bessinger in flight B and Paul and Harriet Finger in flight C. Top scorers for August were John and Bette Strauch.

Our September 8 unit game was won by Robin Rodger and Sam Madison in Flight A, Jane Petering and Marianne Klayman in Flight B, and Flight C going to Jianguo and Tianze Tan.

On September 22 Cameron and Mary Cotton captured Flight A, with Carol Murphy and Batia Kvashny taking both Flights B and C.

Monday Game — A special congratulations to Jill Seagren and Nagy Nosseir who had a 70.77% game on September 9th. On September 30th the winners of the Club International Fund game were Jon Wright and Greg House in Flight A and Toby Burke and Ramey Farah in Flights B & C.

Wednesday Game — Paul Darin and Ray Sachs had a 70.51% game on September 9. Congratulations! Attendance at the Wednesday games hit an all-time high of 17½ tables on September 23. A club championship game will be held in November.

Monday Game — The club appreciation game on October 7th was won by Roy Green and Bill Grant. Flight B winners were Gary Horton and Sally Ishihara, Flight C winners were by Tom Sauer and Victor Ellkind. The October 14the club charity game Flight A winners were Larry Sherman and David Oakley, Flight B & C winners were Karen Hunt and Irene Sowle. Roy Green won 10.9 MPs in the October Monday games. Good job, Roy!

The table count continues to increase with an average of 24½ tables per game in October.

Wednesday Game — winners of the Club Appreciation Game on October 16 were Phyllis Yates and Jim Johnsen; Flight B winners were Elaine Chan and Pam Lawrence; and Flight C winners were Chebi Jada & Bridget Poizner. Average table count is up to 16 tables!
