2015 Unit Reports in the Contract Bridge Forum

Each month the La Jolla unit contributes to the What’s New in District 22 section of the D22 edition of The Contract Bridge Forum, the newspaper members receive. Gathered below are the reports for 2015. The month refers to the publication month but the newspaper is delivered slightly before the publication month, reports are submitted a couple of weeks in advance, and the reports cover the preceding weeks.


December 2015

Our November 8th game was won by Avram and Susan Ninyo (Flights A and B), with Matthew Kidd and Trish Lane taking Flight C.

On November 22 Mac Busby and Paul Darin took Flight A honors, with Flight B going to Linda Gu and Larry Sherman, and Flight C to Evelyn Lantz and Merrel Olesen.

We had a fifth Sunday game on November 29, Flight A conquered by Kent Hartman and Maritha Pottenger, and Flights B and C by Chris Hastie and Daniel Koppenhafer.

The Unit would like to welcome new unit members Kathleen Bertram, Rebecca Clelland, Shanti DuCouer, Sophie Haimsohn, and Karen Morse, and also extend hearty congratulations for following accomplishments: new Junior Master—Shelley Basson; new Club Master—Janet Miller; new Regional Master—Deborah Goldsmith; and new Silver Life Master—Geraldine Weiss. November 2015

Tom Tatham and Lena Jelusich were the overall winners of our October 11th game, with Flight B taken by Mike Mezin and Elaine Chan, and Flight C going to Bob Mann and Supriyo Datta.

We cancelled our October 25th game in deference to the (very enjoyable!) Coronado/Eastlake sectional that same weekend.

And now we'd like to welcome new members Michael Frager, Nancy Moyer, Sandy Sherman, and Diane Shwisberg, as well as congratulate our great group of unit members who have achieved advancements in their ACBL rank this month: new Junior Masters—Dr. Robert Keefe and Nancy Mogck; new Club Masters—Marty Dialer and Patricia Powell; new Sectional Masters—Lolitia Bache and Helen Miller; new NABC Masters—Sandy Dinnsen and Batia Kvashny; and new Silver Life Master—Carol Abramowitz. October 2015

Our August 9 game was won by Dorn Bishop and William Bartley (flights A and B), while flight C was taken by Robert Mann and Supriyo Datta.

On August 23 the game was preceded by a memorial service for Cass Donovan, a long-time unit board member whose life was lost suddenly to cancer over the last few months. Her energy, friendliness, and cheerfulness will be sorely missed by us all. Winners of the game were Hanan Deeby and Bernardo Figueiredo (flight A), Michael Farber and Myrna Blaufarb (flight B), and Patricia Wilkey and Barbara Blake (flight C).

Our third game for the month, on August 30, was won by Paul Alesu and Bob Brobst, who conquered all 3 flights.

Finally, the unit wishes to welcome new member Diane Palmer and to congratulate the following members who have recently accomplished advancements in their ACBL rank: new Junior Masters—Fran Meronoff and Patricia Powell; new Sectional Masters—Victoria Mogilner and Dr Merrel Olesen; and new Regional Master—Mark Wilf. Lynne Newman and Randall Dougherty won our July 5th unit game in Flight A, followed by Scott and Carol Nelson (Flight B) and Matthew Kidd and Trish Lane in Flight C.

Our July 19th game was the annual Bill Logan Trophy Game, and the big winners, soon to have their names engraved, were Sam Jordan and Jim Martin! In the same game, Marilyn Peters-Dunn and Carolyn Casey shared Flight C honors with Fani Cason and R Coss.

The unit wishes to welcome new members Marjorie Ajay, Shelley Basson, Joel Labovitz, and Deborah and Mark Slonim, and also to congratulate the following members on their advancement in ACBL rank: new Junior Masters—Dr. Charmaine Delprincipe, Michaela Grindle, Ardyce Homa, and Dr. Jay Sonnenschein; new Sectional Master—Dr. Deborah Goldsmith; and new Silver Life Master—Anant Rathi. David Oakley and Greg Chaffee were the Flight A champions in our June 14 unit game, and will have their names engraved on the Weiss Trophy! Flight B winners were Elaine Chan and Mike Mezin, while Carolyn Berger and Donald Thomas took Flight C.

Flight A honors on June 28 were taken by Kent Hartman and Maritha Pottenger, with Flight B going to Matthew Kidd and Trish Lane and Flight C to Christine Denny and Joan Kroener.

Five unit board terms expired in June. At our Annual Meeting and Election game on June 14th, Lynne Anderson and Ron Ignelzi were reelected to a 2015-2017 term. Bob Brobst, Val Frager, and Mary Scott-Knoll joined the board bringing us back up to our full strength of ten board members.

The following unit members have achieved advancements in their ACBL rank: new Club Master–Tom Sauer; new Sectional Master–Merle Datnow; new Regional Masters–Nick Alic and Gary Miyata; new Life Masters–Victoria Currie and Anant Rathi; new Bronze Life Master–Anant Rathi; and new Emerald Master–Ivar Stakgold. Our traditional Memorial Day sectional May 23-25 was a big success, with 230 tables and 1178.08 total masterpoints awarded. Rick Norton Jr from Vista, CA was the overall masterpoint winner, earning 24.74 MP. Here are the winners of each event:

Our unit game on May 10th was won by Lynne O’Neill-Bill Grant (Flight A), Lynne Newman-Randall Daugherty (Flight B), and Ursula Kantor-Lynne Anderson (Flight C).

And finally… Keep evening bridge alive! Sharpen your bridge skills at 7:00 pm Thursday nights at the fabulous Soledad Club facility in one of the longest running games in town.

Our April 12 Unit Championship was won by Liliane Kirchhoff and Stuart Sechriest in Flights A and B, and Barbara Blake and Patricia Wilkey In Flight C.

The April 26 honors were taken by Roger Doughman and Suzanne Lebendig (Flight A) and Tom Sauer and Kathy Byrne (Flights B and C).

Charlotte Blum and Matthew Kidd won both Flights A and B in our February 8th unit championship, with Pat Wilkey and Ray Carson taking Flight C.

On February 22, Ben Domurat and George Humphrey got the Flight A/B honors, and Flight C was won by Barry and Emily Berkov.

The following unit members have recently taken a step forward in their ACBL rank: new Junior Master—Sharon Keith; new Club Masters—Sue Kalish, Sharon Patterson, Roger Patterson, and Barry Schechtman; new Regional Master—Sherry Robins; and new Gold Life Master—Diana Marquardt! Our January 11th unit championship was won by Matthew Kidd and Trish Lane (Flights A and B) and Donald Thomas and Yara Murphy (Flight C). Then on January 25th, Alex Fowlie and Janice Joerger took Flight A honors, with Flights B and C going to Matthew Kidd and Trish Lane.

Also on the January 24-25 weekend, our Non-Life Master sectional at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club was a big success, with 54 tables, 120 players, and 106.06 total silver points awarded. Big silver point winners: Saturday AM—David Schmidt-Thomas Baranga; Saturday PM—John Heberle-Milton Fader; Sunday AM—Maria Uhry-Mike Moser; and Sunday PM—John Howard-RJ Peterson. Our Holiday Party at the La Jolla Country Club on December 14th was won by Freda Anderson and Gail Dunham in Flight A, Buster and Tinker Mico in Flight B, and John and Suella Steele in Flight C.

In our December 28 game, Flight A was won by Maritha Pottenger and Kent Hartman, with both Flights B and C going to Herman Lin and Linda Gu.

The following unit members have achieved advancements in their ACBL rank: new Junior Masters: Bob Brobst and Theadore Hill; new Club Master: Barbara Williams; new Life Master: Dr. Peter Clark; and new Bronze Life Master: Dale Phillips. Congratulations to all!

In our November 9th game, Mac Busby and Steve Johnson took first overall in Flight A, with Elaine Chan - Mike Mezin and Cass Donovan - Evelyn Lantz winning Flights B and C, respectively. And on November 23rd, Elaine Chan and Mike Mezin swept all three flights: A,B, and C… in their victory.

We are pleased to announce the following advancements in ACBL rank: New Junior Master: Dr. Deborah Goldsmith; new Club Master: Heidi Mosher; new Sectional Masters: Betty Black and Renee Gild; and new Silver Life Master: Dr. Stephen Seagren.
